WHO: "Huge opportunity for growth" of medical devices in India

Making devices in the country, could help bring much-needed health care technology to India, officials believe.

When it comes to making medical devices in India, the World Health Organization thinks the industry is "underinvested" in, ZeeNews, a new portal in India, reported.

"There is a need for appropriate and applicable health care technology in India," Nata Menabde, WHO Representative to India, was quoted as saying in a Health Ministry statement, according to ZeeNews. "Our medical devices industry is underinvested and heavily import-driven at present."

The country's new "Make in India" campaign will help change that, according to the WHO.

"there is a huge opportunity for growth and expansion of the medical device industry," Menabde was quoted as saying in the news report. "This would highly improve the access of essential medical devices and health care technology to patients in India."
