Will the FDA start regulating e-cigarettes?

Child-resistant packaging could be at the top of the list when it comes to laws regarding liquid nicotine.

The FDA's lack of regulation when it comes to e-cigarettes and liquid nicotine products is something our industry knows all too well.

In fact, it was brought up to me several times at my first PACK Expo last Fall. Before all those client conversation, I, like many of the people who I have told the story to since, thought that they were regulated. It would make sense that they were, right? Wrong.

Since then, I've written a number of pieces about individual states taking action to regulate them, especially after an uptake in child-related incidents related to liquid nicotine products. I have even spoken to a state legislator in one of the states that pushed for regulations.

The common sentiment, I seem to be writing over and over? The federal government needs to be the ones creating the regulations when it comes to liquid nicotine products.

In a post on the FDA's website, it seems like they might be doing just that. According to The News article below, part of what would be required would be child-safe packaging.

WASHINGTON - Federal health officials are considering whether to require new warnings and child-resistant packaging on liquid nicotine formulas used with e-cigarettes and other emerging tobacco products. Under a 2009 law, the FDA gained authority to regulate some aspects of cigarettes and other traditional tobacco products.
