Adverse medical device events jump 18 percent in China

A total of 98 incidents resulted in death while more than 40,000 caused serious injuries.

Last year medical device adverse events jumped 18.6 percent in China, according to the China Food and Drug Administration.

There were 98 deaths related to medical device adverse events and another 40,920 cases that resulted in serious injury, the Shanghai Daily reported.

"Of all the MDAE, 72 percent were performed by professional medical staff, while 8.8 percent of them were carried out by the patients themselves," according to the news outlet.

The most reported incidents included medical polymer materials, followed by injection and puncture apparatus, and medical sanitary materials, according to the report.
