BOLD Laser Automation, Inc., introduces its latest innovation: the DS1250LJX Dual Scanner Pre-Inspection Platform, purpose-built for IP69K-rated hostile environments.
Designed for rigorous food and medical packaging lines, this system integrates the Keyence LJX and LJS series 2D/3D laser line scanners, providing a critical quality control step prior to fill operations—a move that reduces the risk of contamination and recalls.
“Even with the most diligent packaging practices, an entire product batch can be derailed by a fragment of plastic, a trace of dust, or misapplied adhesive,” says Todd Lizotte, CEO and co-founder of Bold Laser Automation. “Product recalls can also lead to costly lawsuits and damage to brand trust. Our system avoids these mishaps in the first place.”
2D/3D Inspection in Harsh Environments
What sets the DS1250LJX apart is its rugged design for heat, humidity, and high-pressure washdown environments, common in food, beverage, and pharmaceutical production lines. The integrated Keyence LJX and LJS laser profilers deliver real-time, high-resolution 2D/3D surface data capable of detecting minute debris, surface inconsistencies, and embedded contamination—even when present inside transparent or translucent containers.
The dual-scanner configuration provides complete scanning, ensuring full surface coverage of each package before it reaches the fill station. This system-level precision and redundancy means threats are detected that can be missed by visual inspection and standard machine-vision.
Minimizing Production Disruptions
Bold’s design experts determine the optimal mounts and location for positioning the scanning assembly. The system connects to the existing PLC of the fill system, enabling operator control. Motion control, scanning stage, and associated enclosures are rated for IP69K environments, ensuring reliable operation in demanding production conditions.
“In a competitive market, where one quality slip can shift customer loyalty, the cost of not having such a system is far greater than the cost of implementation,” says Lizotte. “The DS1250LJX platform protects brands from the downstream effects of defective packaging and contamination leading to product recalls and FDA investigations.”
The DS1250LJX not only prevents contamination but also supports lean manufacturing and traceability initiatives, integrating with MES and QMS platforms. Early detection ensures that packaging lines run cleaner and faster, with less downtime and fewer customer complaints.
“This system not only enhances the inspection process but also streamlines production by proactively identifying potential issues,” adds Lizotte.
