Condition of American being treated for Ebola upgraded

The healthcare worker tested positive for the virus while volunteering at an Ebola treatment unit in Sierra Leone

Doctors have upped the condition of a patient being treated for Ebola at the NIH Clinical Center from serious to critical, however no other details were immediately available, according to a press relase from the National Institutes of Health.

The American healthcare worker tested positive for Ebola virus while volunteering services in an Ebola treatment unit in Sierra Leone earlier this month.

Since then, the person has been in the facility's Special Clinical Studies Unit, which is specifically designed to provide high-level isolation capabilities and is staffed by infectious diseases and critical care specialists.

No specific details have been released about the worker.

This is the second patient with Ebola virus disease admitted to the NIH Clinical Center. An earlier patient was treated successfully and released free of disease.

Ebola created a stir of headlines the past year, and launched new requirements for people traveling back from the impacted areas. This time, however, the case is not getting as much main-stream attention.
