2010 ... The year point-of-care (POC) diagnostics testing revenue will reach nearly $9.65 billion, up from an estimated $5.05 billion in 2005. There's been a strong trend toward POC testing due to an increased demand for near-patient testing that provides rapid results at hospitals, physicians' office labs, outpatient clinics, emergency rooms, and so on, reports Business Communications Co., Inc.

25-fold ... The increase in RFID production by 2010, buoyed on by pharmaceutical manufacturers, according to In-Stat. In an article at in-PharmaTechnologist.com, the report says "The pharmaceutical market incurs annual losses in the billions of dollars worldwide due to drug counterfeiting. Many in the industry view RFID tagging as a method to significantly curb these losses."

"High-power, ultraviolet light sterilization of PP medical devices and packaging, for example, is a development that is just now beginning to show promise," says a recent article at www.plastemart.com.
