New Insoles Self-Adjust to Prevent Foot Ulcers

Researchers developed fluid-filled shoe inserts that automatically adjust to alleviate foot pressure.

A recent Technology.org article discussed an innovative way to relieve pressure on parts of the feet that are prone to stress from walking and other activities. A team of scientists at UTARI’s Division of Biomedical Technologies created a dual-layer insole apparatus aimed at preventing diabetic foot lesions, and even received a patent on their invention.

Because diabetic people experience numbness in their legs and feet, they are unable to detect and respond to stress-induced pain. Prolonged stress can lead to blisters, sores and ulcers that can become infected and necessitate amputation. The removable shoe insole consists of fluid-filled cells that shift periodically to alleviate pressure across all areas of the foot.
