A recent Medgadget article discussed the latest in vision solutions for blind people. A team of scientists at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia will soon begin clinical trials on a wireless brain implant that could restore limited sight in people who are completely blind.
The implant is positioned on the surface of the brain, and works in unison with a pair of glasses outfitted with a camera. The images recorded by the camera are transmitted to the implant, which allows the user to see 172 different bright spots that can make up rudimentary vision. Though the system is being developed to correct blindness, the same wireless technology could also solve paralysis by bypassing injured nerves and linking limbs directly to the brain.
