As you know, it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so we have another article on the topic of breast cancer. This one is from Forbes, and it discussed a new cancer vaccine from the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. The vaccine may not only stop the recurrence of breast and ovarian cancers, but could also prevent them from developing altogether. Keith L. Knutson, Ph.D. of the Mayo Clinic said it will be at least three years before a phase 3 trial will be available to a larger number of patients, but early studies have been promising.
The vaccine has proven to safely stimulate the immune system to combat both breast and ovarian cancer. Now, the Mayo team has to prove their concept to the FDA via clinical trials. As expected, early detection is vital. With advanced imaging, doctors can find cancers earlier when tumors are tiny and easier to treat and initiate the immune system to attack.
