Study: Insulin Cost Rises Nearly 200 Percent

Doctors say the increase is impacting adherence.

According to a new study published in JAMA, hormone insulin rose nearly 200 percent, Reuters reported.

The average price of insulin went from $4.34 to $12.92 per mL between 2002 and 2004, according to the study, cited by Reuters.

In addition, annual spending per patient on insulin increased from $231.48 to $736.09.

Dr. Robert Gabbay, Chief Medical Officer of the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston, told Reuters he sees how the price increase has impacted his patients.

"I can tell you from seeing patients myself that there are many who can’t afford their insulin and don’t take it or take less of it, and they’re worse off for it," Gabbay told the news outlet.
