Sustainability Advances as Medical Device Packaging Material Consideration

New research report anticipates steady single-digit market growth through 2027, with sustainability, technology enhancements gaining importance.

Moving forward, medical device packaging market will more frequently need to meet growing demand for sustainability, cost-effectiveness, while also employing smart/intelligent packaging for identification and anti-counterfeiting purposes.

For example, says a new FMI report, “auto identification is one of the technologies used to help the machines identify objects or persons. This includes a number of individual technologies such as barcodes, biometrics, and Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID). The advent of smart and intelligent packaging systems has enabled medical device packaging manufacturers to optimize their efficiency, thereby facilitating growth of the medical device packaging market.”

The report also points to the use of technologies, such as the inclusion of watermarks in composite flexible structures or multi-layer rigid packaging that help thwart potential duplication of medical devices. FMI notes that anti-counterfeit technology embedded in packaging maintains the integrity of both medical device products and packaging through complex supply chains.

Meeting increasing sustainability and technology demands comes on top of traditional challenges that both rigid or flexible packaging materials store, protect, transport and organize medical devices—and withstand sterilization. Such materials need to protection devices from shock, puncture, vibration, tearing, heat and humidity, and meet any number of global regulatory requirements.

FMI’s medical device packaging market report reveals pricing analysis, year-on-year growth, market size and CAGR of the market during the 2017-2027 forecast period. According to the report, the market for medical device packaging is anticipated to expand at steady 5.3% CAGR during this time.

Regarding market restraints, an FMI press release announcing the report notes, “There is increasing demand for analysis and testing even beyond regulatory requirements to deeply understand the impurities associated with the packaging that are in contact with the medical devices. For instance, numerous regulations have been speculated by the FDA that made packaging manufacturers comply with.”

The report segments the medical device packaging market by application, packaging type, region, material type, and end user. As the chart here shows, the bags and pouches segment, followed by containers, will lead the market. By material type, FMI says the PE segment is anticipated to lead growth.
