A newly elected Council of Experts of the United States Pharmacopeial Convention (USP) will be responsible for establishing quality standards for medicines, dietary supplements and food ingredients for the next five years. The 2015–2020 Council of Experts was elected at the April 22–25, 2015, USP Convention Meeting in Washington, D.C.

“The work of the Council of Experts is truly the heart of USP,” said Dr. Jaap Venema, Chief Science Officer and Executive Vice President of USP. “Since 1820, USP has relied on the scientific expertise of the time to drive the creation of quality standards with one goal in mind—to improve and protect public health. Still true to that goal, the newly-elected Council of Experts will undoubtedly play a critical role in leading USP’s path over the next five years. I am delighted at the opportunity to work with this group of scientific leaders.” Dr. Venema, who joined USP on April 15, 2015, will assume the role of Chair of the Council of Experts on July 1, 2015.

USP’s Council of Experts and its Expert Committees are USP’s standards-setting body and are responsible for creating and revising standards that appear in the United States Pharmacopeia—National Formulary (USP–NF), which are legally recognized compendia of standards for drugs and drug ingredients in the U.S.; the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC), an internationally accepted compendium for food ingredients; and the Dietary Supplements Compendium (DSC).

These standards help ensure the identity, strength, quality and purity of a drug, food, or dietary supplement product or ingredient. Expert Committee members review and approve these standards, general chapters and test methods, and collaborate on scientific topics supporting the standards that appear in USP's compendia. Expert Committees address specific standards setting areas within USP, such as chemical medicines, biologics, excipients, general chapters and many others.
