Hemant Koshia, PhD, Commissioner of the Food & Drugs Control Administration for the State Government of Gujarat, India, will present a special lecture on anti-counterfeiting of pharmaceuticals at UNIQUITY India 2016, titled: “Serialization & Traceability in the Indian Context: Perspectives and Insights of a Regulator.”

The event will be hosted by Systech International, the global leader in serialization, track-and-trace, and regulatory compliance. Systech’s one-day conference will provide customers, industry leaders, and equipment manufacturers with a firm understanding of the many complex regulatory mandates that are quickly unfolding in India and around the world, as well as effective technologies to meet those demands. The event will take place October 6, 2016 at the ITC Maratha Hotel in Mumbai.

Dr. Koshia plays a key role in regulatory policy and advocacy in India and international markets, having recently chaired the Task Force to advise the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on the optimal path to rolling out a national consumer protection program against the menace of counterfeit drugs. Dr. Koshia has 30 years of experience in regulatory affairs through his work in both government and industry. He spearheaded the implementation of e-governance in the State of Gujarat — the first state in India to do so — and has conceptualized and steered the DMLA/iDMLA project. As a passionate advocate of consumer safety, Dr. Koshia has implemented several major initiatives in his state in this regard.

“Dr. Koshia’s lecture will provide further insight into the critical elements that must be considered for the development of a successful domestic anti-counterfeiting program, drawing from field experiences in the enforcement process,” notes Avi Chaudhuri, PhD, senior partner, Systech.

The State FDA Commissioners, along with their departmental inspectors and colleagues, operate at the front lines in the fight against counterfeit medicines and routinely report on the interdiction efforts that take place across the country. The development of a domestic plan for consumer protection against counterfeit drugs has recently gathered significant momentum and been aided by the contributions of various State regulators.

The effectiveness of any national program is measured by the reductive impact it has on criminal activity in the sector and the overall health and wellness benefits it brings to the Indian people. Dr. Koshia will share perspectives from the State of Gujarat in his lecture. Additionally, there will be a discussion of best practices evidenced at the State and local levels, along with interesting anecdotes and case studies from actual events.
