Packaging contributes to Haitian relief efforts

The healthcare packaging community continues to invest and make a difference in Haiti earthquake relief efforts. Here are just a few examples:

• PR Newswire reported that AcuTemp Thermal Systems and CSafe, LLC provided thermally insulated boxes and actively powered shipping containers to help keep temperature-sensitive blood and medical supplies safe for use for days.

• Parata Systems sent two of its Mini® pill-dispensing robots (with generators)—as well as installation and engineering personnel—to Haiti to aid in medication distribution. The equipment represents a $150,000 donation.

• InterVol, Rochester General Hospital, and Constellation Brands sent medical supplies and volunteers to Haiti. InterVol is a Rochester-based nonprofit organization that manages the recovery and redistribution of medical supplies and equipment.

• Blessings Intl. repackages pharmaceuticals for needy missions around the globe. Two days after the earthquake, its Web site says that it "shipped 800,000 analgesic tablets, mostly ibuprofen, sufficient to provide initial pain treatment for 32,000 people, along with sufficient antibiotics for 4,000+ courses of therapy.” At the same time, Blessings' Web site notes that clinics are closing in developing nations due to a decrease in donated medicines.
