Unlike the previous three forums, which involved all-day presentations, this year's event will feature a morning of presentations followed by afternoon workshops, allowing attendees to learn about specific, focused pharmaceutical and medical device packaging topics. Presentations scheduled for the event include the following:

• “How medical device packaging delivers for prostate cancer treatment: A case history” by Joe Elliott, director of marketing-urology at Watson Pharmaceuticals. This case study offers an educational look at packaging's critical role in a medical device application (see story on p. 22). California-based Watson Pharmaceuticals is engaged in the development, manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of generic pharmaceuticals and specialized branded pharmaceutical products.

• “Walmart's outreach to healthcare consumers and its sustainability mission” by Jeanne Stasny, general manager, Walmart Specialty Pharmacy, Lake Mary, FL, brings attendees up to date on recent activity in its health and wellness division, its sustainability efforts in health and wellness, and the specialty pharma arena. As the world's largest retailer and one of the nation's largest providers of health benefits, Walmart's impact on the pharmaceutical marketplace is significant.

• “Temperature-controlled packaging for biopharmaceuticals, the cold chain, and the regulatory environment” offers attendees an opportunity to learn from one of the leading pharmaceutical companies in the world in this session. Presented by Geoffrey Glauser, director, global packaging technology at Pfizer, this presentation will examine the future of temperature-controlled packaging for biopharmaceuticals, as well as provide a case history focusing on the operational qualification of an active heating and cooling air cargo container. Glauser will also discuss the regulatory environment related to temperature-controlled packaging, and provide a perspective on Pfizer's acquisition of Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in terms of temperature-controlled packaging implications.

• “Pharma packaging—a patient's eye view.” With many companies focused on transitioning products from prescription to OTC status, this presentation will address the key packaging considerations involved in making the switch, including labeling and patient compliance. Dr. John Blenkinsopp, a pharmaceutical consultant in the U.K., brings his medical, business, and global perspectives to the discussion.

• “FDA and regulatory update” by packaging attorney and Healthcare Packaging columnist Eric Greenberg, will explain how FDA priorities have evolved under the Obama administration in terms of enforcement and getting new products to market. Hear about topics such as OTC labeling, nutritional supplements labeling, guidelines for incorporating PCIDs, and other issues of importance to pharmaceutical, medical device, and healthcare products packagers.
