Plastic Ingenuity, a custom thermoformers distributor in North America, has created a recycle-ready polyester (PET) that can be thermoformed into a ready-to-use (RTU) tub. This material is an option for pharmaceutical packaging that minimizes environmental impact.
RTU packaging is commonly used in the pharmaceutical industry to protect vials, syringes and cartridges. Conventional RTU tubs made using an injection molding process often result in material inefficiencies. Plastic Ingenuity’s thermoformed RTU tubs provide protective properties and conform to the ISO 11040-70 design standard, while using up to 40% less plastic.
RTU tubs using Plastic Ingenuity’s healthcare-grade PET packaging material can withstand EtO sterilization (37-63C, 40-80% RH) and maintain a positive impact performance. Additionally, the clear tub and lid enable visual inspection capabilities. This novel PET contains advanced recycled content leveraging Plastic Ingenuity’s ISCC PLUS certified mass balance system.
For additional sustainability impact, Plastic Ingenuity’s PET RTU tubs can be recycled in existing polyester waste streams. The material meets the definition of Resin Identification Code (RIC) 1 outlined by California Assembly Bill 906 and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) 07611. Plastic Ingenuity may also help coordinate potential end-of-life take-back programs to improve packaging circularity within the healthcare industry.
