Smartphone-enabled stethoscope approved by FDA

The medical device can save heart sounds directly to a patient’s electronic health record.

California start-up, Eko, recently received approval from the FDA for a wireless stethoscope.

According to the Silicon Valley Business Journal, the stethoscope can wirelessly stream heart sounds to a doctor's smartphone and directly into a patients' electronic records.

The medical device, called Core, "uses a Bluetooth-connected mobile app, available on the Apple App Store, to let clinicians view a heart sound waveform, save heart sounds directly to a patient’s electronic health record and collaborate with a cardiologist for a second opinion," explained the article.

Doctors involved in clinical trials, such as cardiologist Dr. John Chorba, seem to like it.

"The beauty of the Eko Core is that it captures the heart sounds in a streamlined way that has never been done before, interfacing seamlessly into our traditional exam without requiring any extra effort," he was quoted as saying in the article.
