Cold Chain Technologies Celebrates 50th Anniversary and New Headquarters

Amid expansion, thermal packaging pioneer marks 50 years of providing smart solutions

Cold Chain Technologies (CCT), the leading source for temperature-controlled packaging solutions for all segments of the life science supply chain, commemorates its 50th anniversary and announces the relocation of its corporate headquarters.

Located in Franklin, MA, CCT’s new headquarters features a greatly expanded facility. It houses a world-class manufacturing operation supported by the country’s largest—and highly accomplished—thermal package engineering and R&D center. The company’s customer service and multiple support teams are also located in Franklin.

Founded as FDC Packaging in 1967, the company was originally a regional provider of insulated shipping containers and freezer bricks to the food and seafood industry. In 1998, when the biotech industry was emerging, Massachusetts native Larry Gordon purchased FDC Packaging. Gordon, who earned degrees from Tufts University and MIT’s Sloan School, repurposed the company to focus on temperature-control shipments within life sciences by investing in the company’s people, products, and technology.

In 2002, FDC Packaging was renamed Cold Chain Technologies. At the same time, Cold Chain Laboratories was established; a cGMP compliant, ISTA certified, and ISO maintained facility that has evolved into the industry’s leading center for thermal design and qualification testing. Also in 2002, CCT relocated its facility to Holliston, MA, from FDC’s original location in Medfield, MA. Later in the decade, additional manufacturing facilities were opened in Nashville, TN, Reno, NV, and in Europe.

Today, CCT is proud to design, qualify, and manufacture the largest portfolio of off-the-shelf and customized packaging solutions across a wide range of sizes, multiple temperature ranges and durations. Its products are used in many segments of the life sciences, including commercial manufacturing, clinical trials, specialty pharmacy compliance and direct-to-patient shipments.

CCT’s flagship brands, KoolTemp® GTS Qualified Shipping Solutions and Koolit® Refrigerants, are manufactured and distributed throughout the U.S., Canada and Latin America, and throughout Europe with CCT’s partner, Topa Thermal.

In 2016, CCT launched its award-winning Koolit® Advanced PCM GEL, the pharmaceutical industry’s first commercially available solid, shape-stable phase change (PCM) refrigerant designed to maintain the integrity of temperature-sensitive therapies and medicines during transport.

Gordon said, “Our cutting-edge new product is a game changer. A gel formulation versus liquid allows for form-fitting leak-proof refrigerants that are lighter weight and more cost-effective than what’s currently available in the market. This is quite a year for CCT. We are thrilled to be celebrating both our 50th anniversary and opening of the Franklin, MA facility. Our growth and leadership position within the industry is due to the ongoing dedication and efforts of our employees. Their desire to excel, to continually learn, and to provide extraordinary service to our customers allows us to partner closely with the world’s leading pharmaceutical and biotech companies in the delivery of life-saving medicines. CCT is well poised to continue to provide our clients with ever-smarter solutions.”

Cold Chain Technologies (CCT) is an ISO 9001:2008 global developer and manufacturer of temperature assurance solutions for the pharmaceutical, biotech, health care, clinical trial distribution and medical device industries. Distributed from multiple U.S. and international locations, CCT's trusted brands include Koolit® Refrigerants, KoolTemp® Pre‐Qualified Shipping Systems, and KoolTemp® Insulated Containers which are available in a wide range of sizes, durations and temperature ranges.
