Three more sustainable packaging successes at Abbott

• In 2009, Abbott Nutrition reduced the amount of material in corrugated boxes for all infant formulas in the 32-oz Ready-to-Feed packaging by 14.2%. The improved box design reduces corrugate use by more than 500,000 lb annually, which saves the equivalent of approximately 3,900 trees each year (assuming 30% average recycled content per box). The old weight was 255 grams; the new weight is 218 grams.

• Abbott redesigned the clamshell package of its pharmaceutical Lupron® to reduce its use of polystyrene by 15.8%. Developing a new plastic mold allowed Abbott to choose a thinner package material, which reduced the plastic use by 12,750 lb/yr. The change reduced packaging weight from 0.976 oz to 0.790 oz.

• In 2009, Abbott started implementation of a lighter board material for several of its pharmaceutical product cases. The lighter grade of the packaging resulted in a 14% average reduction of packaging weight, an estimated reduction of 50,000 lb in 2009. The lighter board reduced the packaging weight from 9.17 oz to 7.88 oz.
