FDA flexes its muscle

Several months ago, Packaging World/Healthcare Packaging legal columnist Eric Greenberg pointed out that the U.S. Food & Drug Administration would increase its activity in the new administration under Dr. Margaret Hamburg.

Recently, as PharmaManufacturing.com reported, the agency announced its “Transparency Initiative,” with a Transparency Task Force that aims to provide the public with timely, user-friendly information on FDA activities and decision-making. There's even a new FDA Basics Web site that's a bit less overwhelming than its main Web site.

Several recent FDA warnings about pharmaceutical warnings and recalls have arrived recently in this editor's e-mail in box. Perhaps the most prominent among these pertains to FDA's criticism of Johnson & Johnson's McNeil Consumer Healthcare Tylenol recalls, reportedly stemming from mold on wood pallets. In-Pharma Technologist.com reported last week that J&J expanded its U.S. drug recall due to more contamination fears. Greenberg, shown in the accompanying photo, will report on this matter in the February print issue of Healthcare Packaging.
