Flexible Zinc-Based Battery Packs More Power Into Less Physical Space

Ultrathin, flexible, printed battery touts increased power density for 5G services, new IoT applications.

Hcp Zin Core Battery Lifted Up

Imprint Energy’s latest generation of zinc-based battery technology, ZinCore, is set to improve portable power and unlock doors in advanced IoT product design and mobile connectivity. This thin, flexible battery packs more power into less physical space and can withstand the rigors of hot environments and cold chain storage. ZinCore will be used across various markets to power smart label applications, including pharmaceuticals, MedTech, agriculture, supply chain, and cold chain logistics, and more.

ZinCore batteries provide 10X more power in the same volume as Imprint Energy’s previous zinc-based battery, ZincPoly. It also achieves greater temperature operating ranges while meeting 5G radio demands. ZinCore is thinner and more flexible than commercially available conventional lithium batteries, with a width of 1.0 mm and a bending diameter of 3 in. ZinCore is manufactured through a customizable, scalable, printed process that allows for large-scale production of batteries that fit the shape and size required by unique project design needs. This customizable nature allows ZinCore to innovate through barriers in the design of smart labels, medical devices, and IoT wearables.

ZinCore is resilient in adverse conditions. It is fully submersible underwater and has an operating temperature range of -35 °C to 60 °C. This resiliency, coupled with ZinCore’s ultrathin, flexible, and lightweight properties, allows for use in nearly any smart label track-and-trace solution.

ZinCore’s zinc-based chemistry is safer and more sustainable than lithium batteries. It avoids safety issues, such as explosions and fire, and is classified as non-hazardous waste. ZinCore is not ignitable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic. Zinc is 12X more abundant than lithium and has 78% less greenhouse gas emissions over its entire lifecycle, including production.
