Beckhoff: Compact servomotors

Offering a low rotor moment of inertia as well as quadruple overload capacity, Beckhoff Automation’s AM801x and AM811x servomotors (which have been added to its AM8000 servomotor series) feature F1 flange size with a 40 mm edge length to provide high levels of motion dynamics in the smallest installation spaces.

AM801x and AM811x servomotors with flange size F1 enable the implementation of extremely compact, yet highly dynamic servo solutions.
AM801x and AM811x servomotors with flange size F1 enable the implementation of extremely compact, yet highly dynamic servo solutions.

Three overall lengths cover a torque range from 0.22 to 0.55 Nm, enabling the implementation of highly dynamic, yet exceptionally compact drive solutions. This space-saving design makes the servomotors ideal for applications with fast cycle changes, and machines with small footprints, conserving plant real estate.

The new motor types differ in their rated voltage, among other factors. An extremely compact and economical EtherCAT servosystem can be implemented simply by combining the AM811x motors with EL7201-0010 and EL7211-0010 servomotorI/O terminals from Beckhoff, providing 2.8 ARMS and up to 4.5 ARMS respectively, at 50VDC. Additionally, the AX5000 EtherCATservodrive (1 or 2 channel, up to3A continuous current per channel) can be used to control the AM801xservomotors, which are designed for 230VAC.

Optionally, the servomotors are available with backlash-free permanent magnet holding brake and feather keyway groove shaft. To offer maximum performance in a compact size, the motors are equipped with an absolute encoder and OneCableTechnology(OCT). With OCT, the motor supply and position feedback signal are transmitted through a single cable, significantly reducing the component and installation costs. Upon request, the motors are available with multi-turn absolute encoders.

Three key integrated user benefits

Due to the multi-turn absolute encoder integrated in the AM801x and AM811xmotors, the absoluteposition of the drive is immediately known when switching the axis on, making homing functions unnecessary. Thus, the system can be started without reference drives to the end positions. Not only can the position of the axis be determined in this way, but also the current displacement speed. The drive position is stored in an EEPROM without batterybuffering.

With these features, the new motors are ideally suited for feed and traversing axes, since limitswitches and additional encoders are not required. The compact AM8000 series servomotors can also be rapidly and reliably identified in plant networks, thanks to the electronic type plate that contains mechanically and electronically relevant data such as serial number, type, and manufacturer’sdata. Integrated error memory also enables on-line diagnostics in the motors.

Moreover, safe drive functions can be implemented very simply, even in the smallest installation spaces when using the AM801xservomotors in conjunction with the AX5805TwinSAFEOptionCard (installed in AX5000 series servo drives). This not only enables traversing and feed axes to be switched off safely, but also the programming, including safe motionfunctions according to ENISO13849-1 to PLe. The motors can be switched torque-free, and monitored in terms of speed, position, and direction of rotation. Thus, traversing and feed axes can now be easily integrated into the TwinCATsoftware platform from Beckhoff, which considerably increases the availability of the entire machine.
