Boulder Clean, a producer of plant-based laundry, dish, and surface cleaners from Boulder, CO, has partnered with Braskem to introduce a new and fittingly-sustainable package: a 230-oz bottle for its laundry detergent that incorporates 25% plant-based bioplastic in the form of Braskem’s I’m green™ Polyethylene.

Says Steve Savage, CEO of 1908 Brands and Boulder Clean, “We are elated to partner with Braskem and take advantage of their bioplastic innovation to improve the sustainability of our Boulder Clean packaging. With the integration of carbon-negative bioplastic into our latest laundry detergent container, we are taking bold action to help ensure our naturally clean products are safer for our homes and our planet.”

I’m green PE bio-based plastic is made from ethanol, a renewable and sustainable resource produced from Brazilian sugarcane. Explains Braskem, the material retains the same properties, performance, and application versatility of fossil fuel-derived PE, making it a suitable drop-in substitute for conventional oil-based PE. Cultivation of sugarcane utilized in the production of I’m green™ PE captures CO2 and releases oxygen, which means Braskem’s bioplastic has a negative carbon footprint. From a cradle-to-gate life-cycle perspective, every ton of I’m green PE used in the production of packaging equates to 3.09 tons of CO2 captured from the atmosphere.

According to Joe Jankowski, Commercial Manager for Braskem’s Renewables team in North America, Boulder Clean kept the bio-based content to 25% to manage the higher cost of the I’m green PE resin.“Boulder Clean wanted to start their sustainable packaging journey, and do so in a way that enabled them to still remain competitive. They chose to start at this amount of green PE in their 230-ounce bottle to balance the value of the premium green PE along with the beneficial environmental impact of using the resin in their packaging.”

Beginning in this month, Boulder Clean’s laundry detergent container made with I’m green PE is available in more than 50 Costco Wholesale locations in Southern California, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado. The new, more sustainable bottle is fully recyclable through traditional post-consumer recycling channels.
