The recent rash of news about quality and identity issues involving a broad range of products imported from China has companies and consumers wondering. Counterfeit drugs and other products have recently been the subjects of one or another problem. China has been recognized by companies, the Food & Drug Administration, and other governments as a problematic source of counterfeit drugs for years. So what's the answer, are Chinese products and ingredients immediately suspect?

Late last year, the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (www.ispe.org) introduced a new packaging Community of Practice (COP). The COP held its first meeting at ISPE's annual meeting in Orlando, FL. Chairing the packaging COP's Steering Committee is Linda McBride, senior director of regulatory affairs for Leawood, KS-based medical firm Enturia, Inc. (formerly Medi-Flex). McBride is a former columnist for Healthcare Packaging.

New designs for OTC packaging
Increasing legislation, the range of over-the-counter (OTC) products, and growing consumer awareness are placing demands on the format, performance, and image of OTC packaging. Those trends led Chesapeake Corp., a Richmond, VA-based supplier of paperboard and plastic packaging, to launch a design center/studio and product development group dedicated to helping pharmaceutical companies strengthen their brands through packaging. Located in Nottingham, England, the design center offers packaging design, materials development, and analytical management services. While its current focus is on pharmaceutical packaging, Chesapeake is also looking into designing for medical device packaging. Five full-time employees evaluate materials and printing processes for cartons, labels, leaflets, leaflet-labels, booklets, and combinations thereof. The studio features new offices, a new Esko-Graphics Kongsberg sample-making table, and the latest computer equipment to run 3-D simulations.

Eight keys to prevent false labeling
According to Section 502 of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, "A drug or device shall be deemed to be misbranded—if its labeling is false or misleading in any particular." Some examples of false labeling are incorrect, inadequate, or incomplete identification of a medical product. Below are eight keys you can use to tailor your operation to prevent false labeling:

Packaging and personalized medicine
Personalized medicine packs the potential to revolutionize drug packaging and distribution. Essentially, personalized medicine would allow a doctor to prescribe precisely the right drug at the right dose to an individual based on that person's unique DNA. This exciting possibility stems from the Human Genome Project (HGP), a 13-year research endeavor completed in 2003. Coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health, HGP identified the genes that make up human DNA. That research helped create the field of genetics. Diseases have a genetic component, be it inherited or stemming from the body's response to environmental stresses.
