OTC packaging: Thinking outside the pharmacy
A recent trip to the drugstore had me wondering: Is OTC packaging getting a bit ... well, stale? As my eyes scanned the shelves, a sea of cartons and bottles blurred before me, and I found it difficult to focus on any one product. It seems bold graphics and bright colors are no longer enough to distinguish one product from another. So what can manufacturers do to maximize shelf appeal and make their product stand out? Perhaps it's time to think outside the pharmacy. Some companies are already moving in this direction. Their take: Just because you're selling your product in a drugstore doesn't mean it has to look medicinal. Even food and cosmetic packaging can serve as inspiration to separate your product from the masses.

Compliance packaging: Tips from a contract packager
Creating compliance-prompting packaging is no easy task. Anderson Packaging uses the following practices to help its pharmaceutical customers. The need for compliance—or regimen—packaging, as well as packaging that combines two or more drugs, will be acute as the massive baby boomer generation ages and requires more prescription medications. • The package's structural design has to be intuitive, easy to open and operate. • The print needs to be large enough and offer enough visual contrast to be read. • If the package is a multipack that meters out multiple medications, its contents have to be filled in the correct sequence in the package. Failure in any of these steps could result in packaging that the patient can't read or open, or—worse—medicines being consumed in a regimen other than what the physician prescribed, or not at all. "Most of our customers use their own design agency," notes Justin Schroeder, Anderson Packaging's marketing and business development director, but with its own in-house package design team. "We can also come up with the design concept," Schroeder says.

Medical device automation; device reuse controversy
Further evidence of advancing medical device packaging automation surfaced during the January 30 MD&M West Conference in Anaheim, CA. Following Belco Packaging Systems' Tom Misik's presentation, Equipment Considerations for Tray Sealing, I asked him if he notices medical device makers beginning to ask for more complex controls on their packaging machinery, as is often the case with food, beverage, and pharmaceutical firms. Misik said medical device companies were driving the use of advanced machine controls and, in fact, had influenced the development of some of Belco's sealing equipment.
