Technology 'Disrupts' the Health Industry

Innovators who want to bring technological advances to the health sector could face a number of issues.

With items like the Fitbit and the Samsung Gear Fit, everyone knows that technology is becoming a part of health regimens on the consumer side, but what about other areas of the health industry?

According to a recent NBC News report, the health industry is being targeted by innovators and techies as the next area they want to "disrupt."

"Digital health is the idea that we use mobile phones and tablet devices to make health care delivery more effective and cost effective," said Dominic King, a surgeon and behavioral economist at Imperial College London, who was speaking at TechCrunch Disrupt panel.

But, innovators are singling out one specific problem that could pose problems -- regulations -- especially when it relates to medical devices.

"Failure to go through the regulatory approvals for a medical device is a criminal offense," said Bleddyn Rees, head of health care at law firm Wragge Lawrence Graham, according to the article. "And some people are jumping over that regulatory hurdle and may not even know that's the jump they made."
