On the eve of the one-day MedinIreland (Medical Technology and Healthcare Expo 2011) event in Dublin, Healthcare Packaging senior editor Anne Marie Mohan visited the country's west coast in Galway to meet with two innovative companies supporting the country's booming medical device industry. The companies, Anecto and Advant Medical, then exhibited at the trade show and conference on Oct. 27, hosted by Enterprise Ireland, a state agency responsible for supporting the development of manufacturing and internationally traded services companies.

Global pharmaceutical market undergoing dramatic change

Despite considerable financial pressures, the U.S. pharmaceutical industry continues to grow. A new report from ResearchandMarkets Ltd. says, "In recent years, the global pharmaceutical industry has undergone dramatic changes, spurred on by pricing pressures, the emergence of new channels and new markets, considerable generic growth and the development of specialist-driven, low-volume products. This is opposed to high-value, high-volume primary care blockbuster products."

Pharmaceutical firm advocates using less OTC meds

Help Remedies, the New York-based creator of minimalist over-the-counter medicine, is communicating the message that less—less drugs, less dyes, less coatings—is sometimes more. The company's statement, "Take Less," calls out "big pharma" for its excesses and promotes the idea of moderation in over-the-counter drugs. A company press release notes, "Help isn't an anti-drug company; in fact they are a drug company; one that understands and values the importance of medicine, yet thinks that simplicity and moderation are desperately needed in the industry."
