Healthcare packaging professionals reveal top concerns

A Healthcare Packaging magazine reader survey revealed the top 10 areas of concern for packagers of pharmaceuticals, biologics, medical devices, and nutraceuticals moving into 2012. Professionals identified their top-ranking issue to be processing and packaging. Package testing ranked second and in a close third was FDA and regulatory issues. Finishing fourth, in terms of respondent choice, was new developments and materials.

Maalox Plus launched in slider pack in Italy

According to Burgopak, Sanofi has selected the supplier's slider design for its heartburn treatment, Maalox Plus, which was launched into the Italian market in September. The pharmaceutical pack incorporates Burgopak's patented sliding mechanism, keeping the patient information booklet, the blisters containing the medication, and the branded outer carton connected at all times.

FDA looks to spur innovation, improve public health

U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D., announced a blueprint containing immediate steps that can be taken to drive biomedical innovation, while improving the health of Americans. Titled "Driving Biomedical Innovation: Initiatives for Improving Products for Patients," the blueprint addresses concerns about the sustainability of the medical product development pipeline, which is slowing down despite record investments in research and development. "The innovation blueprint is another part of our effort to help businesses grow and keep Americans healthy," said HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

Merck announces its 2010 global corporate responsibility report

Merck launched its first report developed in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative since it merged with Schering-Plough in 2009. Themed "Discovering" to highlight the company's commitment to discovering innovative health solutions, the report examines four critical business areas: Access to Health, Environmental Sustainability, Employees, and Ethics and Transparency. "We recognize that expectations for companies like Merck are higher than ever before," said Kenneth C. Frazier, the company's president and CEO. "We need to continue to be both innovative and profitable, but need to do so in a way that protects the environment, supports communities, respects employees, and demonstrates ethical behavior."

CDC report reports 112 million annual incidents of drinking and driving

Apple's recent unveiling of a faster iPhone 4S was another reminder of the impressive march of advancing technology. Earlier this year, Ford Motor Company announced that it had developed a car seat that uses embedded sensors to detect electrical impulses generated by the driver's heart. Could medical devices be developed that might be able to detect the presence of alcohol on a driver as a way to help reduce the staggering number of drunk driving incidents?
