Packaging World

Cold Chain Forum takes global, holistic perspective

Among the event's highlights is a new U.S. Pharmacopeia 1083 guidance chapter aimed at pharmaceutical counterfeiting in the supply chain. Track and trace is becoming more significant globally, and product pedigrees for pharmaceuticals could lead to a time in the not-to-distant future where a nurse or medical care practitioner will scan a package and verify that it is the right product and has not been tampered with and is not a counterfeit.

Surviving a new era of FDA enforcement

Since 2009, FDA's increased power and budget have led to more seizures, injunctions, Warning Letters, and recall events, with penalties enforced to discourage future offenses. More inspections and public enforcement actions—even YouTube videos—are part of the new strategy the agency hopes will ultimately help safeguard consumers of healthcare-focused products.

Animal hospital analyzes pet packaging

Dr. Rae Ann Van Pelt, DVM and co-founder of 21-year-old Family Pet Animal Hospital in Chicago, gives a "paws up" and "paws down" to different veterinary packages. Ease of use and application, which seem like obvious benefits, are not always part of such packaging. She is happy to see more packaging coming boxed and sized for dosing by weights. In this article, Van Pelt discusses several package configurations, concerns about mail-order products, and her "pet peeves."

New dosing feature for Pedia Care

For single-concentration brands of children's PediaCare and Little Remedies products, new packaging helps to protect infants and children under age two. The new two-piece dosing syringe with barrel and plunger is Prestige Brands way of demonstrating its commitment to accurate dosing, safety, and innovation. The voluntary change makes sense given the FDA's preference for the drug industry to make acetaminophen safer.

Anti-counterfeiting label

Pharma-Comb Void label with integrated covert inscriptions helps eliminate the illegal practice of empty vials being refilled with fake drugs and resold. Multipart label with integrated security features; label is functionally destroyed during its initial use. When the label's tear strip is removed, the inscriptions "opened" and "used" appear, making undetected reuse of a glass container with an original label virtually impossible.
