Blister lines speed changeovers for German contract packager
C.P.M. Contract Pharma GmbH & Co. KG refers to itself as "one of the biggest pharmaceutical contract manufacturers in Germany." The Temmler Group company's Web site notes, "Besides the production of solid, semi-solid and fluid forms of administration, we can also handle the complete development and project management of products through to validation." The company packages ointments, creams, gels, and pastes. C.P.M. employs three Noack N 921 blister lines from Romaco that speed product changeovers and increase line efficiency. C.P.M. also added a Romaco Promatic cartoner that switches from continuous to intermittent operation.

Supreme Court issues preemption decision involving generics
In late June, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a decision saying tort actions are preemptedthat is, overridden by federal law, preventedagainst generic drug makers for failure to warn about specific hazards. In other words, the Court said persons injured by generic drug products that are claiming the maker of the product failed to warn them about something are, from now on, prevented by federal law from doing so. This represents a big change that affects many companies, and thousands of cases brought by thousands of individuals against the companies.

Evolving sectors gain attention at global forum
Medical devices and diagnostics, generics, APIs, and biologics are on the agenda at the 9th Annual Cold Chain & Temperature Management Global Forum Sept. 26-30 in Philadelphia. The biopharmaceutical market, worldwide, is set for high growth. This growth of novel biological therapies, including monoclonal antibodies, cell therapies, cytokines, and new vaccines, is setting the scene for tomorrow's cold chain, demanding an increase in specialty packaging, handling, and distribution as a result of vibration sensitivities at certain frequencies and the affects of relative humidity.

The job market: Not so healthy-or is it?
A 9.2% unemployment rate is disturbing, but there appears to be cause for optimism regarding healthcare packaging-related jobs. Some good news did come out of the government report: "Health care employment continued to trend up in June (+14,000), with the largest gain in ambulatory health care services. Over the prior 12 months, health care had added an average of 24,000 jobs per month." What about packaging jobs in the healthcare market? There are so many factors at play, but a recent Freedonia report said, "The U.S. will remain the largest consumer of pharmaceutical packaging as its advanced drug-producing sector introduces sophisticated therapies with specialized packaging needs."
