Packages designed for patient user experience win market share

A recent survey by technology design and development firm Cambridge Consultants, in conjunction with MassMEDIC, reveals patients are willing to pay more for advanced features, which can increase compliance, improve health outcomes. A winning example: Merck's EasyPod auto-injector device. The survey notes that while medication compliance is made up of complex factors, an appropriately designed drug delivery device can affect many of those, and go a long way toward maximizing patient compliance. Compliance, in turn, is a critical component to the overall efficacy of the treatment itself, and to improved health outcomes.

Consumers have role in combating pharmaceutical fraud

The escalation of fraud associated with pharmaceuticals costs society in lives and dollars lost. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce reports that the pharmaceutical industry loses more than $30 billion globally to counterfeiting each year. While the costs are high, the risk to health is even higher; the U.S. Center for Medicine in the Public Interest estimates that 15% of medicines sold worldwide are fake, killing an estimated 700,000 people a year. Unfortunately, there are no signs that the criminals associated with pharmaceutical fraud are slowing down. According to the FDA, the crime rate for pharmaceutical counterfeiting and package tampering was up 11% in 2010 from the prior year. In this article, Adam Scheer of Advanced Optical Technologies and chair of the Intl. Hologram Manufacturers Assn. discusses what brand owners and consumers can do to address counterfeiting and authentication.
