Publisher's Perspective: Pharmapack Paris 2011

Healthcare Packaging Publisher Jim Chrzan reports that counterfeiting continues to be a major theme at this conference, where suppliers offered sophisticated solutions to authentication and track-and-trace. Each supplier continues to stress that no one solution is the answer to the dilemma. Serialization seems to edge out other solutions as a universal panacea. But questions remain, such as what about global standardization? Which organization will establish these standards? Where will all this data be stored? What about authentication measures being offered to doctors, nurses, or moms and dads? And with the advent of smartphone technology, I would think we would be hearing more about putting the patient in the authentication driver's seat.

Label typo leads to recall of J&J's Sudafed

On its Sudafed Web site, Johnson & Johnson notes that the company worked "in consultation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration," on a recall of the company's Sudafed medicine. The Web site says, "McNeil Consumer Healthcare initiated the recall at the wholesale level due to a typographical error in the Directions section on the label, which incorrectly repeated the word 'not' as follows: 'do not not divide, crush, chew, or dissolve the tablet. To date there have been no reports of adverse events caused by this labeling error.'

Pharmapack special report: Future trends in pharmaceutical packaging

Drug delivery options, cultural preferences will help shape pharmaceutical packaging through 2020. Healthcare Packaging Publisher Jim Chrzan reports on Feb. 23 events from Pharmapack in Paris, France. "Speculations" is the title of a presentation on future trends in pharmaceutical packaging through 2020, said speaker Michael Spallek, warning the audience that in 1995 the industry had predicted huge growth in needle-less delivery and transmucosal drugs, both of which did not prove as successful as predicted.

Global compliance issues influence pharmaceutical traceability

More challenges face the healthcare industry today than at any time in the previous 30 years. Pressure on patents, massive growth in the incidence of counterfeit products, a spotlight on manufacturing efficiency, and the increased complexity of developing and releasing new medicines are all causing major upheaval within the industry.
