Packaging issue leads to voluntary Pfizer recall
Packaging's significance was in the national spotlight Feb. 1 as Pfizer Inc. announced a voluntary recall of Lo/Ovral®-28 (norgestrel and ethinyl estradiol) and Norgestrel and Ethinyl Estradiol Tablets (generic) birth control pills in the U.S. Twenty-eight lots, or approximately one million packs of contraceptive products, were recalled due to out-of-order placebo pill placement in some packs.

Sanofi Pasteur launches 2D bar coding for pediatrics
The American Academy of Pediatrics and Sanofi Pasteur, the vaccines division of Sanofi, announced that pediatric offices across the country will now have access to a new vaccine packaging technology that will capture more product information in a simple two-dimensional (2D) scan--including lot numbers and expiration dates--than was possible in a standard linear bar-code scan. The new technology is designed to reduce medical errors and help healthcare providers document vaccine information in patient records with greater accuracy. |

Packaging and cough-and-cold meds for children
As a result of research and U.S. FDA warnings, the Consumer Healthcare Products Assn., which represents most of the makers of children's OTC cough-and-cold medicines, announced that its members were voluntarily changing their product labels to say "do not use" in children under 4 years of age, and introducing child-resistant packaging and new measuring devices.
