The centers served local residents near the John F. Foley Skilled Nursing Facility in Yaphank, New York throughout the month of November. The shelter system includes field hospital beds with the capacity to provide health care to approximately 60 patients. The facility was staffed by medical reserve volunteers.
The facility is a combination of two BLU-MED RapidSurge packages, which can be delivered by pickup truck and, after quick assembly, each provides 1,500 square feet of floor space. The fabric buildings included complete electrical systems, lighting and heating, and are powered by diesel generators. The shelter system is designed to withstand 100 mph winds and 20 pounds per square foot of snow, so follow-on 'Northeaster" storms were no threat to continuing operations in the facility.
